ORPHAN AID UGANDARA is an initiative founded in 2016 to respond to ever rising psycho social needs of orphans, and young poor single mothers in rural areas and slums of Uganda. We design innovative and participatory programs to mitigate the negative effects of orphan hood and economic exclusion among young single mothers, empowering communities in an environmentally sustainable manner.
CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION
ORPHAN AID UGANDA has been engaging in a series of economic and social enterprise activities targeting School going people, youth and OVCs in Northern Uganda. The change of the original focus on these groups to designing interventions targeting youth, who had dropped or couldn’t afford fees for their higher education, was motivated by the desire to reduce the high rate of crime, address the issue of limited resources and negative traditional practices which favor the boy child in preference to the female whenever the resources are scarce. While the boys were absorbed in income generating activities like fish farming, pottery and indigenous tree planting which consequently earned them some income, the neglected girls soon became the easy targets for the boys as they could be lured into sexual activities with the promise of some little cash. This led to high incidences of HIV/AIDS in the area, early pregnancies and a high incidence of OVCs. To stem this trend, ORPHAN AID UGANDA came to the realization that economic development planning must be based on an integrated approach for it to achieve its goals without producing undesirable social consequences.
Currently, ORPHAN AID UGANDA is mobilizing youth into 10 groups of at least 20 members each which are then encouraged to save a small amount of money each week in order to receive a loan to begin in turn a small gainful employment and to find a way out of poverty. We also provide Psychological support and counseling to HIV affected young poor and semi illiterate single mothers, Irregular feeding program for 10 orphans and Poor informal pre-primary schooling for 7 OVCs.
The day to day running of the projects activities is headed by a director who provides the overall project management function at the direction of the EC who are charged with the role of policy formulation and direction. The project coordinator has over 10 years’ experience designing and managing community based interventions throughout the country. The current BOD has 7 members with a combined experience of more than 20 years working with community social programs in Uganda and abroad. To maximize effectiveness and
efficiency, the EC has three sub-committees responsible for Finance and Fundraising, Strategy and recruitment. Each project has an independent Project Advisory Committee, instituted before any community project is commenced. It is this committee which oversees the general administration of the project including advising on personnel recruitment processes for the specific community project.
